In and around Tucson and Southern Arizona....
New in southern Arizona: Two Native American CASINOS
Now in the Tucson area total of four...More in the Phoenix area and around the state. Not the sparkle of Las Vegas...but for the gaming its there. Golf is still big, but not as expensive or exclusive as up around Scottsdale.
Difficult but not impossible housing; both prices on
purchasing and renting have gone up...a lot over the past couple of years...but where in the country hasn't it?
SNOWBIRDS...those coming to visit Tucson just for the winter months up North. Still a big factor in the area, both from the stand point of the economic value and strain on the resources to serve the community.
BIG FACTOR...the aging population moving to the desert for health, recreation, retirement...services are expanding but not at the rate or affordability as in the past years.
INTERESTING FACTOR from 2000 Census..
Tucson has almost 11,000 permanent homes vacant during part of the year waiting for their owners to return when the winter season hits up North.
SONOITA and ELGIN
Sonoita/Elgin, the grasslands are vast and dotted with vineyards, and cattle, Brahma bulls, pronghorn antelope, and horses complete the landscape. The communities are diverse, yet the binding ideals are an appreciation of the beautiful countryside and a deep respect for individuality.

METROPOLITAN TUCSON CONVENTION
& VISITORS BUREAU

From Old Pueblo to Southwestern Metropolis
Tucson was formally founded in 1775, about the time the nation's forefathers were signing the Declaration of Independence. Locally, the city is still called the Old Pueblo for the adobe fortress or "presidio" that marked its early borders.
Over the past three centuries, Tucson has grown from Native American farming community, to Spanish outpost, to dusty frontier town, to bustling, territorial days' railroad hub, to the mature Southwestern metropolis it is today.

For a perfect introduction to Tucson and Southern Arizona's past, visit the Arizona Historical Society and the Arizona State Museum. Displays and artifacts chart regional history from the earliest inhabitants, to Spanish conquistadors, to statehood. For more history, take the self-guided Downtown Walking Tour and stroll through a restored 19th century neighborhood, see Sonoran architecture, and the site of the original Spanish presidio. To learn about Tucson's significant aviation history, visit Pima Air & Space Museum, the world's largest privately-funded air museum. (All of these sights and more are featured in a special Heritage & Culture travel itinerary.)
